origin of unconventional gender options

Hello. At the suggestion of Pavel Curtis, I'm writing to ask if you can give
me some information on the origin of the unconventional gender options,
e.g., spivak, splat, etc., on LambdaMOO and other MOOs. I am interested in
this in connection with some research I'm doing on play with gender identity
on IRC and MOOs.
