So what does one do once they have Lambda v 1.8.0p5 compiled and running?

I'm using the lambdacore from parc.xerox.com that is titled "latest"  When I
connect I get the black screen or nothingness and the only response the
server will return is "i can't understand that"

Am I missing something important like a welcome message and connection
scripts or what?
