    Funded PhD Studentship in Collaborative Virtual Environments for
                    Distributed Software Engineering

                   Martlesham Heath, Ipswich, Suffolk


Applications are invited for a funded 3-year full-time PhD research
studentship tenable at the Department of Computer Science, De Montfort
University, Leicester.  The focus of the work is in investigating
distributed collaborative working environments for software engineering.

Applicants should hold a first or upper-second class honours degree, MSc
or equivalent in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related
discipline.  Experience of Java, C++ or other OO programming language is
required.  Knowledge of distributed object technologies (such as CORBA),
CSCW, Virtual Environments, MOO/MUDs or UNIX is preferred.

The successful candidate will work on a joint project with British
Telecom investigating the use of collaborative virtual environments to
support distributed software engineering.  Work will be undertaken at De
Montfort University's Leicester campus, although the candidate will be
expected to spend at least 3 months in total at BT's research labs in
Martlesham.

The position is funded by an EPSRC Industrial CASE Award, and
remuneration will be according to standard EPSRC maintenance grant rates,
supplemented by a significant contribution from BT.

date).

The successful candidate must be able to take up the studentship on or
before 1st October 1996.
