trouble comiling on NeXT

I'm having the same problem compiling 1.7.9p2 on NeXT.
I looked through the Moo-Cows archives and noticed that this came up
about a year-and-a-half ago, but there never seemed to be any announced
resolution.  There was talk of fixing configure and there was mention
of some trickery with the -traditional flag.

Is there a known-to-work solution?
