How to record outgoing message

The instructions on the vgetty page were useful in getting vgetty set
up, but I'm stuck on the creation of a message that my modem.
I first tried vm record standard.rmd and it finished recording as soon
as it started. Then I thought that perhaps I had to plug a mic into
the modem itself. This too did not work, but may reflect the quality
of my cheap Rockwell chipset modem.
So I turned to coverting the wav file I had prepared usign my windows
software. Working from your suggestions, the following worked
wavtopvf input.wav | pvfspeed -s 7200 | pvftormd Rockwell 4 >
output.rmd
Adding this to Index led to success when I called the modem, although
the sound quality had become a bit mangled, but clearly audible, in
the process.
That said, vm play output.rmd leads to nothing - I do have a speaker
in the voice modem (which works a little - I can just hear a caller
when they are leaving their message through the speaker)
Can anyone clarify where the mic should be located.
Kvoice has not quite got it totally working yet - I was using that
before resorting to the command line - and i don't think there is
anything else available to simplify the use of vgetty.

p.s. Why won't minicom start when mgetty/vgetty is running?
