vgetty and Gateway TelePath II

I got a Gateway TelePath II (I think it is same as "US Robotics
Sportster v.32bis")
When I try to record a greeting using "vm record -m greeting.rmd" I get
an rmd file but I cannot play it back (either by using "vm play -s" or
by calling in) When I call in I hear no message, then tone, then it
sounds like it is recording. But as you see in the log, it does not.
Result is a 32 byte file containing nothing but "RMD1US Robotics".  BTW,
the "alarm signal" shown bellow usually does not appear. in the logs,
just this time.

Any ideas?
