Problem with `vm play -s output.rmd'

I am using vgetty and it works fine as an answering machine.
It does play the welcome message and records the message people leave
for me.
But during somebody calls, I can't hear anything on the internal modem
speaker.
To test why not I tried whether I can play a rmd-file using the `vm'
program:
[root@nozomi /root]# vm play -v -s kfrog.rmd
vm: playing voice file kfrog.rmd
This takes a few seconds, as if `vm' really plays the file, but I
can't hear anything.

I also tried the command `vm play -v -t kfrog.rmd'. According to
`vm -h' the meaning of the option `-t' is
-t use telco line (default)
I a not sure what this means. Does `use telco line' imply that I
should be able to hear the message with my telephone handset while
`vm' plays it? I hear only the dial tone from the telephone handset.
Is this a configuration problem, or a problem with my modem?
