You are absolutely right: It was a pbm.gz. Either the new_fax script, or 
xfmail in decoding has got rid of the .gz    :-(


I didn't check due to the reassuring "file format is" message.



Meanwhile, I got things working, not perfectly (uuencoded .gif mailed 
instead of MIME, but it's not too bad). 
I have posted a description for faxing with mgetty+sendfax from Wordperfect
to de.comp.os.unix.linux.newusers.
