this system lacks PPP kernel support

Hello mgetty,
     I use slackware3.6,kernel is 2.0.35.+mgetty1.1.9-Aug17 ,it seems the kernel
surely support ppp .when it booting,it says:
"PPP Dynamic channel allocation code copyright 1995 Caldera, Inc.
PPP line discipline registered."
     and If I don't use mgetty,I can use pppd normally(such as use ppp-go
to dail to my internet provider)  ,but when I add
     "S1:2345:respawn:/usr/mgetty-1.1.9/mgetty ttyS3 -D  -s 19200"
to inittab,and init q,just type "pppd",it says:
     "sorry,this system lacks PPP kernel support"

     It's same to use getty.
     Why? Any suggestion is welcome. Thanks.
