wvdial does not like mgetty

The mystery is: If there is no mgetty, wvdial nicely creates a 
/var/lock/LCK..ttyS0.

And if I start minicom, and start wvdial later, wvdial correctly reports: 
Cannot open /dev/ttys0: Device or resource busy.

So I do not see how it can be a lockfile issue. /dev/modem does not exist 
in this system anyway.
