Ending records w/vgetty API...

I've been playing with the vgetty API again, and I have a question in
reference to RECORD. In the past, I've responded to events, such as
SILENCE_DETECTED, *TONE, etc, by sending STOP to vgetty, and waiting for
the corresponding READY to come back. My question is whether I really need
to do this (on some modems, it requires 2-3 STOPs before the READY
returns - the Sportster 33.6 being the offender I have the most experience
with), or whether, should I wait a little longer, the RECORD will stop on
its own after an event that would normally give a hint that it should stop
recording.
