ZyXEL made a "switch box" to solve this problem. It allows you to plug
in your modem, telephone line, and telephone. It has several relays used
to connect your TELEPHONE (not handset) to the line jack of the modem,
and provides the power necessary to allow you to play and record messages
through the telephone.
The list price on this box is $30
(if interested, contact local dealer, or sales@zyxel.com)
The 2864 modem has none of these restrictions.. it has an upward-facing
speaker, microphone and speaker jacks, as well as enough relays to
support each jack on the modem.
