I'd start with something different, viewfax might be a good idea :).

We don't really need a general all-purpose bitmap manipulation tool,
"just" placing text strings in a few different fonts and pix sizes
(*large* fonts -- remember, the resolution of a fax is quite high!)
should be fully sufficient for 95% of all cases...
