FAX resolutions and tones

  I've been running mgetty-0.22 with linux 1.2.13 and it's been great! I
have a couple questions that I hope can be answered.

1) I have noticed that sometimes when people call me that their fax
machine is not sending the intermittant tone that my modem uses to detect
an incoming fax call. Does the sending machine expect to get a carrier
from the receiving fax machine under certain curcumstances?

2) Some fax machines I've seen have can send faxed in "Super fine" and
"photo" resolutions. Is this some propriatary extension or can most G3
Class2 fax modems send/receive faxes in these resolutions as well?
Perhaps one must have software that can "convert" these formats?

Basically, I'm just wondering if I can send/receive faxes using mgetty
and my Supra FaxModem 28.8 V.34.
