Yes, my sentiments exactly. Good one Gert!

As for you problem, you should read the comments in the login.config file
more closely...

Change the /AutoPPP/ line to read:
/AutoPPP/ -     -       /usr/sbin/pppd auth -chap +pap login

Where the two hyphens are the important part. As per the comments, this
allows the PPPd to make the utmp entry instead of mgetty.

Alas, you will still have problems if you are working off the owner of the
dialup line, as the PPPd runs setuid root, root owns the dialup line of all
people who use AutoPPP (I found this out for myself the hard way today). If
anyone knows of a workaround, I'd love to hear it, but this isn't the place
I guess...
