pppd lock files?

Things do work fine when using a straight ppp connection (no diald).

The problem is that you can't use options settings (like lock) with
diald. You have to let diald set them itself...
They are being set in /var/lock so i'm not sure what the problem is...

If I do a ps and look at how 
how pppd is setup, it shows a bunch of options but never the lock one...
??
