OK, I got enough other things working (it's been a frustrating couple
of days) that I could run Netscape and acroread and got the
programming manual for the chips.

OK, it turns out that FCLASS=1 is fax mode, FCLASS=8 is voice (IS-101)
mode, and FCLASS=80 is VoiceView(tm) mode (which *might* have to do
with a speakerphone which my modem doesn't have).

So I feel a lot better now, but I'd still appreciate it if anyone who
knows what they're doing wanted to look at it and tell me: ``changes
in the functions abc, def, and ghi should do it''.  If you want to see
