You should configure the MSN->protocol mappings (AT&ZI...) in the modem.

Should be doable. Just setup AT&ZI... in the modem so that it does the
right mappings.

You should try to get a binary copy of 1.1.19 or at least 1.1.18 - there
have been some significant changes in the voice support, and a new feature
("cnd-program") has been added that might be necessary here to avoid
answering on the -987.
