Some problems with VM?

Okay, there appears to be a problem with what the vm code understands
and perhaps with what the latest ROM version of the 1496 is capable of... ?
/usr/local/bin/pvftormd: Unsupported sample speed (11025)
/usr/local/bin/pvftormd: The ZyXEL 1496 only supports 9600 samples per second
vm.log has this:
01/03 22:25:32 opening voice modem device
01/03 22:25:32 opened voice modem device /dev/cuaa0
01/03 22:25:32 reading port cuaa0 configuration from config file
/usr/local/etc/mgetty+sendfax/voice.conf
01/03 22:25:32 detecting voice modem type
01/03 22:25:32 ZyXEL 1496 detected
01/03 22:25:33 ROM release 6.19 detected
01/03 22:25:33 initializing ZyXEL 1496 voice modem
01/03 22:25:35 playing voice file file.rmd
01/03 22:25:35 vm: Wrong modem type found
Not sure what "Wrong modem type found" is trying to say here.
I guess I'm a bit confused. I had been told that the 1496 was the best for
voice operations, but
here I am seeing that the 2864 is newer and supports the newer compression
algorithms.
Back when I had my first "digital answering machine" on an AT&T 3B1, I had
much better
luck with these things and the sound files that resulted sounded very nice.
So, I'm
wondering just what I'm missing here :)
