Hi,
sorry for being late in responding, but (insert the usual)...

I haven't had any experience with the 336S yet, but basically it's similar
to the 2864 series, so it really *should* work, at least for basic stuff.

Ugh.

This is really annoying, yes, and makes the modem unusable for reliable
operation. Did you contact ZyXEL about it? It might be some problem with
German postal regulations ("no ATA allowed") - but ZyXEL has known about
this for a long time, and *fixed* it in other products (permit ATA *only*
after an incoming RING, which is sufficient for us).

I'd talk to my distributor, and tell them that you can reproduce it with a
terminal program (this is important - otherwise, everybody keeps saying
"we don't support Linux, go away", which is clearly nonsense here), and
ask them for a fix.
If they have any specific questions about the environment, tell them
that you're using mgetty, and offer to send them log files -- mgetty is
actually mentioned in the ZyXEL 2864 manual (in the "Unix" section), so
maybe you can point to that... - feel free to send further questions to
the list, but I'm afraid we won't be able to help much.
[Hmmm. I see you're writing from Austria. The ZyXEL support for Austria
is a LOT better than the support for Germany - you might want to contact
Manfred Recla directly, he's also coordinating all the beta test groups.
His E-Mail address is m.recla@zyxel.co.at]
