Handset recording

In the quest of recording an ordinary phonecall I've now come to the point
"It should work".
In the specification of voicecommands for my modem (Rockwell chip i.e
Diamond SupraExpress 56e PRO) I found AT#VLS=8, which is supposed to route
the handset to the line, through the codec. In that way you can record a
phone call.
>From the Rockwell AT reference:
" AT#VLS=8 - Recording a handset conversation on phoneline "
The problem, of course :-(, is that it doesn't work. The modem just answer
with errors when I try to set it to that mode with minicom.
It seems as if the handset commands don't work at all.
I can't get vm with start/stop signals from handset on/off hook to work either.
( vm record -w testfile )
It never detects that the handset is picked up.
Same thing with the record from handset function
(vm record -H testfile)
Has anybody done this? Does anybody have any idea?
