Caller ID

I want to learn more about how to record the caller ID signal,
using my Zyxel 1496.  

I read an article in ALT.2600 which indicated that, in example,
a call that is displayed as "PRIVATE" actually transmits the
phone number anyways, but the CID reader knows to display
"PRIVATE" based upon a code number which is in the string/signal
that is sent.

I'd like to record the entire signal for each call.  Might be interesting
to have mgetty/vgetty record information into a database, etc., and
possibly change the names of the recorded messages to correspond
with the date and time, etc.
