vgetty with rockwell-chipset

Hi !
I have an askey-modem with rockwell - chipset and try to use vgetty.

But i have a little problem.

I can play my messages with vm trough the internal speaker of the modem
without any problems. But if i try to send messages to the line, the modem
isn't able to switch to voice mode, so i only hear the beep on the other
side of the line. But, strange thing, the recording of incoming calls is
possible.

So, what exactly is the difference between playing through internal modem
speaker and play directly through the line ?
