I do have a usr 33.6 voice sportster (talking to a usr 14.4 sportster)
with mgetty runing on both. Yes, one or both do go into unusable states
that are curable by power cycling the modem (cycling the machine can
sometime s fix things too - probably by spiking the mains :-). However
this is not the solution ...
In fact the best cure is to run minicom on the affected modem. I think
the problem is the faxready state that mgetty puts them in and minicoms
"bye bye" message always resets them back to sanity. That's apart from
trying a few atz0 (not atz, since that doesn't work on usr) and at&f0
and whatever. _anything_ that can get back to a sane state. Then I
usually make a data call through minicom. Sometimes it doesn't work - a
ppp negogiation will hangup the modems in this state - but usually it
does. And as soon as a data call has gone through the state machine
seems to have been regularized. Bad attacks of the illness really do
need the on/off switch with a five minute wait, however.
Then there are the mysterious registers on the usrs that can help ..
something like ats15.7=1 afair. ("strange firmware anomaly" or whatever
....). It took me a year to find out how to call data from the 33.6 to
the 14.4 (don't autobaud).
