USRobotics-Sportster-Flash-56k woes

Hello. I need help with an external modem US Robotics Sportster Flash 56k (with
x2 extensions). I bought this modem to attach it to my work computer so I can
dial from home. Prior to this, I used to have an internal modem (some sort of
generic brand) that worked flawlessly, until a lightning storm affected it. I
have been trying to get mgetty to work with the (USR) modem, but without
success. I have tried several configurations, and I think I have read all the
relevant documentation (from both the mgetty distribution and the modem package
and www site). The last mgetty I have installed is 1.1.19 (I have tried several
older versions, with the same results). The problem I encounter is the
following: once I have mgetty up and running, if I dial from another
telephone inside the University, I get an answer as expected (RING -->
ANSWER and so on), but when I dial from home, the AA light activates
on the (external) modem, but the log file remains silent (level 5 debugging),
and the answering process is not launched by mgetty. I suppose when I
call from home there is something analog in the way, and I'm sure inside
the University everything is digital, but I don't know how this affects my
problem. Can anybody help me?
Thanks,
Ricard
P.S.1: I work on a linux 2.0.36 machine. If more information is needed, I
can supply it.
P.S.2: Here are a couple of relevant pieces of the log file:
