Now that's pretty interesting.  It's not an USR, but it tries to identify
as one.  Could be an USR/3com OEM, with the known-good fax reception
quality.

[Fax reception seems to be exceptionally hard.  ALL current modem vendors
have problems with it.  Some just give up at session startup (ELSA),
others just mess up the whole reception process... - has anybody any
recommendation of a Really Good faxmodem for reception?  My ZyXEL 2864
works surprisingly well, if I think about it...]

This workaround is only for *sending*...

You might want to try "mgetty -m 9600", to force reception down to
9600bps max - this might help.  It might not.  You'll have to try it.

Pretty typical USR problem: much "line noise" at the top of the received
page.

... and fairly crappy reception afterwards.

I'd try to get the latest firmware version, and if that still doesn't
work, give it back.
