Actually, this is GOOD.  Now you can go to the vendor and say "hey, your
box claims '2.0', the modem doesn't work with it (not a Linux problem,
your software doesn't work either!), so fix it, or take it back".

Hmmm.  I didn't think so, but it might have helped.
