serial connection

I am not really sure if you are dealing with such kind of problems. Here
we go: I've bought a Toshiba 4x86 Notebook, without pcmia, cdrom, or
whatever. My idea is, in order to connect the notebook to the rest of the
world, to establish a ppp connection over the serial port using mgetty,
any a NullModem. Is that basically possibel (assuming I manage a basic
Linux System). Has ever anybody done things like that? And how did he
install the Linux without CDROM's Is there any kind of Floppy
Distribution? (I know that this is not what this mailing list is dealing
with...;-)
