You can install Linux from floppies, but it is Slooooooooooooooooow!

The last time I did a floppy install was 1994, and I think it to about 
70 1.44 MB floppies for the full blown thing.

Regarding the serial hookup, I used a serial PPP link between 2
machines before I set up my ethernet LAN.  If the distance is short
(like 2 meters or so) you might want to use PLIP instead, as it is
quite a bit faster, but PPP definately works.  

You do not need mgetty to do a null-modem ppp connection; just run ppp 
manually all by iyself.
