The easiest way to do this is with a hardware approach, provided you
have a couple of available hardware ports, either on the same or a
different machine within a cable's reach. The additional advantage is
that you do not need to touch the software on the machine being
monitored, and so the data can be logged to a secure machine that is
completely seperate from the monitored one.
What you do is make a cable that acts like an extenion cord to the
RS-232 line being monitored -- it does nothing. But in addition, you
make a T tap for both transmit data and receive data, and put one of
these signals to the receive line of one sniffer port, and the other
one to the receive line of the other port. Now you may use the
hi-tech program 'cat' to log traffic in both directions to a file, a
console, or whatever you want.
