I have had similar problems with my MT2834ZDXv connecting to my ISP if it's
using LAPM. I've now told the modem to use NMP3/NMP5 instead, and it seems
to be better. This problem sounds similar to your problem, only mine was
originating a call, yours is answering a call. I'd also bet that in your
case the originating modem is a USR/3com?

For my modem, the command is AT#Ln, where n is:
 0 - modem negotiates V.42 mode
1 - NMP on, LAPM off
2 - LAPM off, NMP on
3 - no detection, go straight to LAPM.

Check your modem manual, I know that there are command set differences between
the MT2834ZDXv and the MT2834ZDX.
