Yap that is quite possible. Run PPP daemon on the linux "server". Or
if u want a faster solution (U don't mention the OS of the notebook, but
this will work under win & linux) you can also use PLIP. Which is PPP
through the parallel port.

Maybe he used an external HD or a Jazz drive? It's also possible to
install it over NFS. (probably with a disk image that has PLIP support)
