Maximizing data transfer rate AutoPPP w/56K Courier

After much frustration with the 3COM sportsters, I finally bought a USR Courier
(Ouch, it still hurts) This modem works flawlessly, but I would like to know if
there is anything special that I need to do to get the ppp communication up
above 24,000

That seems to be the highest baud rate that I can connect at. Any suggestions? 
I've tried connecting windows to Linux, and linux to linux using mgetty.  On the
Linux to linux situation, I have two courier 56K modems on each side, and on the
windows to linux, I have a courier 56K on linux, and sportster 56K on windows.

ANy suggestions?
