Thanks everyone who responded.

Part of the problem was that I didn't realise that mgetty doesn't keep
the lock file all the time it is running, only when it is actually
using the modem (I'm too used to Windows comms software!)

Not I've corrected the location of minicoms lock files, everything is
working.
