Which microphone? That of the Sparc? Telephone attached to modem?

Strange. Did you check whether the bit rate is right?

I think this is documented somewhere, but I can't find it right now.
Anyway, yes, this is to be expected since the modem is in voice mode.

Start all dial-outs with ATZ or AT+FCLASS=0.
