converting to adpcm3 to au?

Hi, this morning I managed to record my greeting message in .au format
and successfully convert it to adpcm3 however I wish to go the other
way. ie. I wish to hear my incoming messages on my internal speaker.

Why doesn't this work?

adpcmtopvf < voc-filename | pvftoau > /dev/audio

This just sounds garbage to the internal speaker.

The voice files work fine on the modems speaker with zplay -s
