Why do I sound like I'm on helium?

   When converting from ulaw to adpcm when the sound is played via the
   speaker on the modem I sound like I'm on helium.

/dev/audio is expecting an 8Kbytes/second sample, and the ZyXEL
default is to digitize at 9.6Kbytes/second.
