Playing back messages

How exactly does the play back of messages work?

ie Am I suppose to get in my code during the greeting? if so I have to make  
the greeting long enough right...

ie. Say, I wait for the beep (after the greeting) and punch in my code to  
hear the messages will that leave any message? I basically want it to know  
that if at anytime during the call it gets my code then it is not to record a  
message.

Please clarify.
