I'm running into a problem with vm diagnostics using a
USRobitics Sportster model 1171, OS RedHat 4.1/2.0.29.

Diagnostics halts at ATI3 - error message states
"can't read modem"

However, using Seyon ATI3 returns as expected.
( as does ATI1 - ATI11 ) 

I'm having multiple configuration problems and am wondering
if the modem is bad or what's going on?

VM play also emits garbbled sounds. Any hints as to what I
might be doing wrong?

Ultimate plan is to have a automated voicemail system with
faxback capability.

Should I trash this modem and get a Zytel or Multics?
