Hey there. I did manage to get my USR 56k voice faxmodem to work. Thanks to
all of you who helped out!
I have a few tips for using it.
Make sure you have the 1.1.19 sourcecode of mgetty (or later??). It works OK.
To record using the modem, issue `vm record -m test.rmd` and pick up the
telephone that is connected to the modem. It will serve as a microphone. `vm
play -m test.rmd` will use the handset as a speaker as well. `vm -s test.rmd`
will make the external speaker on the modem click like it is working, lights
flash, etc, but no sound comes out. (perhaps an at#VGR problem??) `vm record
-i test.rmd` will also work; it uses the internal microphone of the modem.
(I've got the external faxmodem, I'm not sure how this works for you internal
modem guys)
But the best way of getting a nice outgoing message is to record a wave and
then do `wavtopvf ogm.wav | rmdtopvf US_Robotics 4 > ogm.rmd` ... works quite
well. Note that this is the ADPCM compressor; I think it sounds much better
than GSM.
And finally, here's the ATI? information furnished by my modem:
>>ATI
5601
>>ATI2
2247
>>ATI3
U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Pro EXT V4.8.163
Note: I believe EXT stands for 'external,' not 'extended.'
A useful site for this modem: http://www.pcd.usr.com/techref/techref.htm
Best wishes,
