couldn't reset a modem

I suspect it is a Rockwell typer modem.
Anyway, the vgetty with the mgetty1.1.14 distribution delivered with
RedHat is broken.
Please upgrade to a non broken version first. Your problems will
probably disapear.
Use at least the mgetty 1.1.18 distribution...
