Mgetty prefers to have the modem "locked" at a fixed port speed, like
38400 or 115200, and have the modem do the rate adaption to line speed.

Now that's usually a "bad phone line quality" problem, or the modem init
string isn't ideally yet - see your modem manual for tips about that,
that's not really a mgetty issue.  Mgetty only cares (and knows about)
the speed between modem and computer, which doesn't affect the line
CONNECT speed, as long as it is *faster*.
