mgetty and vgetty

I'm completely new to the world of mgetty and vgetty.  I'm hoping to set up
voice mail on my linux machine, and I'm in the process of doing some research
on it.	Other than having a voice capable modem are there any requirements?
Specific Makers, models, or brands of modems?  How do mgetty and vgetty
relate. Is vgetty a subsystem of mgetty, or an expansion of mgetty?  Will a
generic modem (not a winmodem) work?

I appreciate any assistance.
