So, this shows that mgetty has done its job correctly since pppd has
been launched.

In your mgetty's login.config at the AutoPPP line, add
debug option, since we don't see what is happening.

Here would be a typical AutoPPP line assuming the server shows itself
as 192.168.2.1 and requests CHAP authentification.

/AutoPPP/ - a_ppp   /usr/lib/ppp/pppd auth +chap -pap crtscts modem -detach debug 192.168.2.1:

You then need to complete /etc/ppp/chap-secrets.
