vm errors

I'm getting the following errors in my vm.log
02/28 13:02:32 vm: Modem returned ERROR
02/28 13:02:32 vm: start_play_file command failed
02/28 13:36:01 playing voice file va00544.rmp
02/28 13:36:01 vm: Could not open voice file
I can record a greeting. When I tested leaving a message,I got a loud
beep instead of a greeting. I was able to leave a message, at least there
is a rmd file in my /var/spool/voice/incoming directory, but again, I
can't play that either.
I'm running mgetty/vgetty on redhat linux 5.1. I've got a Zoltrix 33.6
internal, with a rockwell chipset.
I'm not sure if this matters but I have the modem jumpered so that
everything plays through the soundcard. I've actually tried it going
directly from the modem as well, but that didn't work either.
Are greetings recorded with vm actually rmd, or do they need conversion to
that format.
Thanks so much.
