problem with "rings" when used with "ring_type"

I'm trying to use mgetty/vgetty 1.1.20 on a RedHat Linux 5.2
(kernel v2.0.36) box.
My phone line has CallerID and three numbers (using distinctive
ring)
It seems that vgetty always answers on the number of rings
specified in the generic part of the config file, rather than
answering on the number of rings specified on the ring_type part
of the config file.
When distinctive ringing is enabled on the modem (S41=1) it
never sends a RING, it always sends RING A, RING B, or RING C.
CallerID (with name and number) is enabled on the modem. The
modem sends the CallerID info in a multi line format. (it can
send the info on a single line. I didn't know which format is
preferred)
BTW, what is the max number of rings you can set? I don't want
vgetty to ever answer the phone on ring_type 1 (RING A)
Any ideas? I can send debug output if you need it.
Here's an excerpt from my voice.conf
---------- SNIP -----------------
ring_type ring1
rings 8
answer_mode voice
ring_type ring2
rings 2
answer_mode fax:data
ring_type ring3
rings 2
answer_mode voice
---------- SNIP -----------------
