Hmmm. Never tried ECM faxing, but I remember that there were some
complaints on the Hylafax mailing list.

Are you using class 2 or class 2.0? In class 2, the bit order is always
"wrong" (Rockwell compatibility), but mgetty knows about it, while in
class 2.0, the bit order should be "right" by default. Maybe, if you use
class 2, the ZyXEL Rockwell bug-compatibility doesn't work in ECM mode,
and thus the bit order is "double-wrong"...
