Any hp2pbm users out there?

Sorry this isn't actually a mgetty+sendfax question, but I figured this
would be a good place to find hp2pbm users since it's recommended in the
mgetty docs.

I'm looking for someone who's got hp2pbm working properly for pcl4 files
that contain the primary stroke tag (ie. bold). I've been working on it on
and off now for over a month and I can't seem to get hp2pbm to properly
generate g3 files with bolded text. Instead of bold, my font gets switched
from courier to lineprinter, and never gets switched back. The pcl4 file
parses correctly (as evidenced by a "hp2pbm -v < file.pcl4", but the
resulting bitmap file is incorrect. This is running hp2pbm 1 patch level
3, found on ftp.leo.org.

This may be a dumb question, but do I need the pbmplus (now called netpbm?)
package installed to run hp2pbm? I don't see why I would (the limited docs
don't say anything about that), but I'm grasping at straws now since I'd
*really* like to get this working. Thanks.

ps. I should note I'm running this on a RedHat Linux 5.0 machine, but I've
tried it on a Redhat 3.0.3 box and a SCO OpenServer V box with the same
results.
