I myself use hp2pbm (hp2hig3), but can't remember whether our clients use
"bold" and whether it worked or not -- but I definitely didn't get any
complaints, so maybe they just didn't use it.

No.  Only if you want to create pbm files and convert those to GIF or
whatever later, then you need "pbmplus".
