vgetty problems on sco openserver 5 / pentium 100

I am trying to get vgetty to work on a SCO OpenServer 5 / Pentium 100
combination with regular tty2a connection to a Rockwell voice modem.
mgetty works fine. however vgetty/vm don't. vm record creates a voice
file, but when i play it back through vm, there's plain silence on the
line. same with vgetty.

anyone who has tried vgetty before on SCO OpenServer 5 / Pentium and
Rockwell modems can please help me out .......
